The Titans didn't fare well in the first game against Arkansas, as Noe Ramirez gave up an uncharacteristic 7 earned runs in 3 2/3 innings to the Razorbacks.

The Titans didn’t fare well in the first game against Arkansas, as Noe Ramirez gave up an uncharacteristic 7 earned runs in 3 2/3 innings to the Razorbacks. Tyler Pill took the ball with the bases loaded and gave up two hits which earned him two runs, but then settled down and pitched well for 4 innings. Then Nick Ramirez came in to relieve Tyler with one man on and allowed that run to score giving the Razorbacks a comfortable 10 runs for the game.

Offensively the Titans couldn’t seem to string anything together to get some runs on the board early and ended up leaving too many men on base. Toward the end of the game, they had started to shift the momentum, but it ended up being a case of too little too late, and the game ended 10-6 in favor of the Razorbacks.

This means in order to stay alive in Omaha, the Titans will have to battle back from the losers bracket against a tough Virginia team, who is making their first ever College World Series appearance. The Titans and Cavaliers have met before in post season play with the Titans taking the victory. Will they be victorious again today? It remains to be seen, and in my opinion will depend on whether the Titans have lost their Omaha jitters or not. Daniel Renken will be on the bump and if the Titans play Titan ball, we should see them emerge from the loser’s bracket to battle another day. The Titans do have a history of fighting well out of the loser’s bracket, so may the best team win and may they be wearing orange and blue.

There is a sense of expectancy as we await first pitch tomorrow night at Goodwin Field at 7:30 p.m. as the Cal State Fullerton Titans face off against the Louisville Cardinals to see who will win the honors to advance to Omaha, and the College World Series. Although most analysts are picking the Titans to win (and I’m certainly hoping they’re right), I don’t think it will be as easy as everyone else seems to think it will be. The Cardinals have already shown that they are unwilling to go down, by battling back against Vanderbilt on Monday of this week to earn the chance to face the Titans.

The Titans are planning to rely on their standard pitching rotation, which will have Daniel Renken getting the nod for Friday night, followed by Noe Ramirez, and Tyler Pill will pitch on Sunday if necessary. Need I say that I am hoping Sunday is not necessary and the Titans can take it in two? Dustin Garneau will take his usual place of command behind the dish, and we’ll see whether he will continue his stellar performance from the regionals. If the Titans stay focused and play their brand of baseball, they will be a tough team to beat by any opponent. Their goal? To be the last team to take the uniform off for the season.

During that series, Freshman pitcher, Tyler Pill broke the Titan record for most wins as a Freshman pitcher finishing up at 10-3 during regular season play. The Titans hosted Regionals for the eigth time and have won all but their first. Fullerton’s all-time Regional record is 85-34 (.714) including 26-6 (.813) at Goodwin Field. The Titans NEVER have gone winless in Regional play. They have gone 0-2 only once in a Super Regional (2008) and four times in Omaha (1975, 1982, 1990 and 2007). Since the Super Regional format was begun in 1999, and prior to this weekend Miami is the only school to win more regional tournaments (9) than Fullerton (8) — Florida State and Rice also have won 8. Both Fullerton and Florida State have now tied Miaimi at 9 regional tournament wins, and Rice is battling Kansas St. in hopes to notch their 9th.

The Titans had a great weekend as they cruised through their 31st post season appearance in the NCAA Regionals. To give you an overview as to how the Titans dominated their opponents over the course of the three games played:

Titans scored 41 runs versus the opponents combined 9.

Titans wracked up 60 hits over the course of 3 games to the opponents 26.

37 of the runs scored were RBI’s vs. the opponents 9

14 Titans walked, while the combined pitching staff for the Titans only gave up 5 walks over the course of the 3 game series

While the Titans struck out 20 times, the Titan pitching staff struck out 24

The Titan team batting average was an awesome 476, while the opponents hit 248 against the Titan pitching staff

The lowest Titan starter batting average for the series was Christian Colon with 429

6 Titan starters batted 500 or better – Jared Clark (500), Josh Fellhauer (545), Dustin Garneau (583), Jeff Newman (500), Joe Scott (545), & Joey Siddons (500).

Tyler Pill and Noe Ramirez both received all tournament pitching honors, and Dustin Garneau garnered the tournament MVP award. I’m sure the batting average of 583 and having gone 5-5 in the game against Gonzaga didn’t hurt. Khris Davis hit 4 home runs during the weekend, the only Titan to hit the long ball, which brings his total home runs to 16 on the year. He has now put a little bit of a gap between him and the next frequent long ball hitters, Jared Clark (11) and Nick Ramirez (10), so maybe Jared & Nick will try and catch up during Super Regionals. I’d love to see the home run battle of the bats wage on. Needless to say, I am very proud of my Titan team this weekend and hope they take this momentum on to next weekend where they will meet either Louisville or Vanderbilt (the deciding game takes place later today.)

This morning, we await to see whether the Titans will complete the sweep of the Cal Poly Mustangs or whether the Mustangs will put together enough runs to down the Titans. The real question, will freshman hurler, Tyler Pill, give my friend Kelly a win for mother’s day? Need I say, I really want Tyler to get the win? Anyway, let’s take a look back at how we reached this point.

I had too many things going on to write a full article on the mid-week sweep (two games) of the Titans over the Arizona Wildcats. In the second game, the Titans were victorious 8-4 over the Wildcats. Since the Titans play 5 games this week (two mid-week and a weekend series) the Wednesday night game was a combined bullpen win as we had pot-luck pitching. Only two Titan hurlers went more than one inning, with Kyle Witten getting the start and going for two, and Ryan Ackland throwing two innings in relief. Brock Floro, in his second appearance on the mound for the Titans, took the win with one scoreless inning pitched. Colin O’Connell, Michael Morrison, Kyle Mertins, and Nick Ramirez rounded out the active pitching staff for the Titans. Witten gave up two of the Wildcat runs, while Ackland and Ramirez gave up one apiece. Nick Ramirez DH’d during the game and had a couple of RBI doubles while on offense, and Joe Scott brought in 3 runs during the contest. Gary Brown went 4-5 and the Titan offense combined for a total of 13 hits.

Now on to the main course, the games against Poly. A side note on expectations pre-game. The Mustangs went into the series with a 20-2 winning record at home, while the Titans arrived with a 19-4 winning record on the road (two of those were played in OK as neutral site games). Those statistics made the match up especially difficult to try and determine the outcome before hand, but as always, we were hopeful of the win.

Friday
Daniel Renken took the mound on Friday night and gave up 4 runs while pitching his second complete game on the season. Renken fanned 10 of the Poly batters to tie his all-time high, and it was his second 10 strike out performance in a row. Joey Siddons was the man of the game, going 3-4, and he, Jared Clark, and Joe Scott each had two RBI’s a piece. Jeff Newman and Gary Brown both had two hits for the night. The Sac Fly was a big ticket for the Titan offense, as we achieved a season high of 4 for the game. Jared Clark hit two, and Gary Brown and Khris Davis each hit one a piece. Joe Scott also laid down his 20th sac bunt on the season. In the sixth inning, the Titan lead was narrowed to 4-3 after Renken hit the first two batters to the plate (rumor has it the first hit batter leaned into the pitch but was allowed by the umpire) and two runs scored.

Saturday
Noe Ramirez got the start on Saturday, and he pitched 6.2 innings followed by Nick Ramirez, who looks like he is shaping into the Titans closer. Noe, now 6-1 on the season, allowed 3 runs on 8 hits to take the victory. Nick gave up only two hits and no runs to notch his 4th save on the year, ending the contest at 7-3 Titans. The Mustangs took an early lead when Adam Buschini doubled to drive a run home. Buschini gets credit for driving all 3 of the Mustang runs home, with adding a towering two run homer in the bottom of the third. The Titans evened the score in the top of the second, when lead off hitter, Khris Davis, sent his 10th over the wall for a home run. The Titans quickly took the lead by following the run by Davis with a single by Jeff Newman, who was bunted over to second by Joe Scott, who now leads the nation with 21 sac bunts, and was singled home by Joey Siddons. In the top of the third, Josh Fellhauer singled and was driven home by a double by Khris Davis, his 22nd on the season. Noe Ramirez got into trouble in both the fifth and sixth innings, but was able to work himself out of a jam, supported by the Titan defense. In the seventh, after recording two outs, with his pitch count at 107, coach Serrano decided he had done enough and brought in reliever, Nick Ramirez. The Titans added two runs to their score in the top of the seventh, with a single by Christian Colon and Gary Brown with steals and an error allowing Colon to score and Brown to take third. When Jared Clark grounded into a double play, Brown scored. Again in the ninth the Titans added to their score on a Josh Fellhauer single and Jared Clark home run. During the game the Titans stole a season high, 7 bases. Bases were stolen by Christian Colon, Gary Brown, Josh Fellhauer – who stole 3, Khris Davis, and Joey Siddons. Way to create opportunities to score!

The Titans have been struggling of late playing conference games at home. While they are on the road, every one heaves a sigh of relief because their performance on the road has been nothing short of stellar. With an away record of 17-4 and Neutral field (which were actually played in Oklahoma – so to me were also away) of 2-0, they are a tough opponent when not at Goodwin field. However, going into the series against Santa Barbara this past weekend, we were 10-8 at home. The fans in the stands are not used to watching our team lose quite that often during a season overall, and the chatter was how we would be lucky to have a chance to host the regionals this year. Everytime someone would mention that, into my brain popped the rebuttal – but we’re number 6 in the nation!

Jon Wilhite’s family was on hand during the entire series so people could chat with them about how Jon is doing and purchase the live long bracelets to help Jon and his family defray some of the hospital costs. It was rumored that Jon was up and around enough to take a shower and to tell Titan first baseman, Jared Clark, that the shower felt good. It is a blessing that he is improving so well.

We have reached the point where we do need to win some home games in order to stay alive in the polls and keep the confidence of our players up. And against Santa Barbara we were able to do just that. Friday night, Daniel Renken took the mound as is usual on Fridays. He came one out away from pitching a complete game, but had finally lost steam in the ninth and was having difficulty in getting that last out. Titans had a lead of 7-0, but after hitting one, and walking the next, Titans were able to record two outs before the next Gaucho batter hit a double and racked up two RBI’s and breaking the shut out for Renken. Since his hurler had already thrown 146 pitches, Dave Serrano lost no time in pulling his pitcher and the crowd gave him a standing ovation as he left the field. Ryan Ackland came into the game in relief to face Gaucho’s Shane Carlson and struck him out looking, giving the Titans the 7-2 victory. One word about the officiating during the course of the game – it was horrible. The Titans were taken out of a couple of innings by bad calls by the umpires as they were in the process of mounting another offensive attack, so who knows what the score would have been otherwise. Offensively, Jared Clark had two hits and two RBI’s, Khris Davis had two hits and two RBI’s, Dustin Garneau singled for two RBI’s in the third, and Joe Scott sac flied in the eighth to allow Jeff Newman to score the Titans final run for the game.

Having notched a nice win on Friday, we arrived at Goodwin Field Saturday night hopeful to add another home win to the record. While we thought the officiating was bad on Friday, it deteriorated further on Saturday. One of the most ridiculous calls of the game was made by the previous nights official behind the dish. He was now in the field and signalled an infield fly on a ball that was popped up to centerfield. I’d like to take a moment to let any umpires know that happen to read this, that part of the requirements for calling the infield fly rule is that the ball is coming down in the infield. . .you know. . .the part of the field which is defined by the dirt basepath. Any ball which passes the dirt basepath and goes over the grass into the outfield is no longer an infield fly. The umpire in this case made the call as the ball was passing through the infield and ultimately the fielder did drop the ball (there were actually 3 fielders surrounding the ball as it came down). This, of course, was quickly contested by head coach Dave Serrano. The other call during the game which caused a great deal of contention was by the home plate umpire calling Offensive Interference on batter Tony Harkey. Coach Serrano went out to discuss this with him again, but the real contention was between Coach Sergio Brown and the official who made the bad infield fly rule call. The umpire was making his way from behind 2nd base to the home plate area and veered off directly toward the Titan dug out pointing his arm as he did so. Sergio errupted out of the dugout and there was a very heated discussion which followed. Sergio was thrown out of the game, but as he was being marshalled from the field continued to try and walk back to continue the discussion with the umpire who simply turned his back and walked away. Sergio was back in the dugout on Sunday, dressed in uniform and all smiles, while the official in question did not return. Draw your own conclusions.

Ok – now for the game. Titans were victorious once again with a 5-4 win over the Gauchos. Noe Ramirez took the mound for the Titans to start the game and pitched 8.1 innings before handing the ball off to Nick Ramirez. Noe got a no decision on the game, although he pitched a beautiful game as the Gauchos took the lead in the sixth which held up until the bottom of the ninth. The team played well and we were getting men on base and starting to make things happen, but on at least two occasions, the officials took us out of the inning before we should have been. Let’s get down to the nitty gritty of the game. Titans entered the bottom of the ninth down a run at 3-4 Gauchos. Billy Marcoe pinch hit for Joe Scott and walked in 4 pitches. Jeff Newman pinch ran for Marcoe. Joey Siddons singled on what was intended to be a sac bunt. Christian Colon sacrified for the team and moved Newman to third and Siddons to second. The Gauchos decided with one out to intentionally walk Gary Brown to load the bases and improve the chances for a double play ball. Josh Fellhauer then stepped up to the plate, and he was so far hitless in this game. The crowd however, had faith in Felly and we were chanting and yelling our encouragment. Fellhauer singled through the right side and Newman and Siddons scored to win the game. The team errupted from the dug out and practically dog-piled on Fellhauer who had run to second base. The fans in the stands went wild. It was a very emotional moment for the team to be able to succeed at play from behind ball.

Sunday we entered the field with optimism having already won the series, was it possible we could make it a sweep? We had our favorite Section K pitcher, Tyler Pill on the mound and Tyler continues to look better and better as the season goes along. Tyler pitched shut out ball until the seventh inning where he gave up a two out home run with two men on (walk, HBP). He finished up the inning, but then was done for the game. Fortunately, Tyler had nothing to worry about as the Titans won the game 15-3 and he racked up win number 8 bringing him to 8-1 overall. While the Titan offense was hot, the Gaucho defense seemed to fall apart a little bit. While only two errors were charged for the game to Santa Barbara, mental mistakes flourished and the Titans took advantage of every opportunity. For example, the Titans managed to score a run in the second with no hits, and no errors committed by the Gauchos. During the games we frequently see the word Everybody Hits on the scoreboard while the Titans are batting. It felt like that was the case as we continued to bring men home. In actuality, we did have some of our batters not get a hit, but still get on base and score. Christian Colon went long for his sixth of the season as well, but that was the only home run scored by the Titans on Sunday. We had 12 hits to earn the 15 runs and I did feel sorry for the Gauchos as they were definitely not having a good day.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. We were all hoping for later.

The game started off with a moment of silence for Courtney Stewart, Nick Adenhart, Henry Pearson, and Jon Wilhite, as this was the first game following the tragic accident last week. Up at the marketing table, live long bracelets were on sale to help the Wilhite family defray some of the hospital costs. The bracelets are blue and orange and have - Jon Wilhite – Titan Family Forever stamped in them. I will be wearing mine until it either falls apart or Jon makes a full recovery. Pictures of “Whillis” were posted at the table and there were Get Well cards for people to sign. The bracelets completely sold out, and they could definitely have sold more if they had had them. There is also a trust fund which has been set up to assist with the medical costs if you would like to donate any funds.

The Titans did not seem to be on top of their game last night, although there were several good plays made. We led into the top of the ninth from a solid performance put in by Daniel Renken, followed by good relief pitching by Nick Ramirez. Michael Morrison was brought in to close out the game, and just couldn’t get an out. Before the end of the inning, the Tigers scored 4 runs to make the game 5-4.

While we didn’t play to our normal form, the officiating of the game actually cost the Titans a few runs, as well as base runners, which prematurely ended rallies and innings. I swear that one of the umpires had no clue as to how to make the safe sign, but could manage holding up his fist to signify out, so every close play at the bag was an out. The one time he actually didn’t call the player out, he didn’t make any gesture at all, confirming my opinion that he simply didn’t get that far in the umpire’s manual and didn’t know what the signal was.

Our section K player, Tyler Pill will be taking the mound tonight, as Noe Ramirez has run afoul of some Titan rules and has been suspended from playing this weekend. Tyler has had some stellar performances in his past few outings and I’m just sorry that I haven’t had a chance to blog about them. Maybe one day I will catch up. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to make the game tonight as I have another obligation, but we will be rooting for Tyler (and hopefully I’ll be able to sneak game tracker on and we can slope out to check on scores periodically) and all of the Titans as they face of with Pacific again this evening.

The Titans have finally broken the curse that they seem to play under at Riverside’s stadium. Prior to this weekend, the CSUF Titans had only won one game at the Highlander’s home. So it was exciting to see the Titans smash that bogey to smithereens today when they not only won the series, but won to the tune of 18-1. For the momentous occasion, Tyler Pill led the defense and notched another win to improve to 5-0 on the season. Tyler pitched for 7.0 innings, giving up 5 hits and no runs. He struck out 6 and pitched 72% strikes. We couldn’t be more proud of our section K pitcher, who by the way is only a Freshman, so we expect great things for Tyler over the next couple years. The comfortable lead that the Titan offense had created gave freshman Colin O’Connell his first appearance on the mound for the Titans. He pitched for an inning and gave up one unearned run, which was set up by an error on the part of Shevis Shima at 2nd base. Shevis made up for the error a couple of plays later by making a spectacular grab and put out.

Ok – let’s talk offense. The game was scoreless until the 3rd when Joe Scott started the top of the 3rd off with a bunt single, followed by a bunt single by Jeff Newman. They both advanced on a wild pitch during Gary Brown’s at bat. Joe Scott scored on a sac fly by Christian Colon and Jeff Newman scored on a single by Josh Fellhauer. While the Titans didn’t know it, that was actually the winning run for the game. Now moving on the the top of the 4th. As we were heading into the 4th, I had the innings mixed up and was asking for a 5 run 5th. I’ll have to make that mistake more often because during the 4th we sent 12 men to the plate and scored 9 runs leaving no one on base. That’s efficient baseball. How did it happen?

Nick Ramirez singled, then Khris Davis doubled. Billy Marcoe singled, scoring Ramirez. Joe Scott got hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Jeff Newman singled, scoring Davis. Gary Brown reached on a fielder’s choice and Newman reached 2nd on an error and then advanced to 3rd while Scott and Marcoe scored. That’s 4 runs and still no out recorded. Christian Colon grounded out, and the runners could not advance, but then Brown reached 3rd and Newman scored on a wild pitch. Josh Fellhauer grounded out for the 2nd out of the inning followed by a Jared Clark walk. Gary Brown scored on a wild pitch. Nick Ramirez got his 2nd single of the inning advancing Clark to 3rd. Davis cleared the bases with his 2nd hit of the inning being a 3-run home run. Marcoe ended the inning by grounding out to the catcher.

Unfortunately for the Highlanders, who couldn’t quite get into the game after that point, the scoring didn’t stop there. All of the Titan starters with the exception of Gary Brown collected one or more hits, and Gary managed to get on base and score twice without getting a free pass. The Titans scored 4 more in the top of the 7th and 3 more in the top of the ninth. Starting with the 7th inning, coach Serrano started subbing starters out to give some of the bench players a chance to get into the game, and it was good to see Joey Siddons, Matt Fahey, and Wes Borba get hits as well as a little playing time.

The Titans improved to 18-4 on the year and are 2-1 in Big West conference play. They head off in a couple days to play the Sun Devils in Arizona for a 2 game series, so we hope the bats will continue to be hot and keep the streak alive. The contest in Arizona should be another battle as both the Titans and the Sun Devils are ranked in the top 5. The Titans currently are ranked one as far as strength of schedule, so we hope they continue to play well against the nations top teams. Go Titans!!

The Titans have a few teams that always give them a problem, and the Riverside Highlanders just happen to be one of those teams. Our record against the Highlanders playing in Riverside is dismal, and when discussing whether or not to make the trip out to Riverside, that definitely plays a role. It's not that we don't support the team. We listen avidly to the struggle via the radio, and cheer for good plays and root them on when they need a little extra oomph. But, since I am working on getting my Nowhere Feels Like Home manuscript edited and ready to send out to my eagle eyed team to catch all the mistakes I have missed (and yes I miss a lot), a trip out to Riverside is asking for a big chunk of time away from the editing process, and if I am listening via radio, I can support my team as well as getting the manuscript whipped into shape.

Our record against the Highlanders playing in Riverside is dismal, and when discussing whether or not to make the trip out to Riverside, that definitely plays a role. It’s not that we don’t support the team.

I said the two teams facing off for the opening of conference play would be a battle, and I was right. Friday night the contest went pretty much as expected. The Titans played well, but the game turned into a pitcher’s duel. Titans scored early and were holding on to a 1-0 lead well into the game. Then pitcher Daniel Renken, the Titan starter, let one pitch too many rise up and the Highlanders took him over the fence for a 3 run home run. It’s sad when he did such a good job, keeping the Highlanders to 2 hits until that point in the game, to lose it in one swing of the bat. The Titans outhit the Highlanders, but just couldn’t string them together for the necessary runs.

On Saturday, Noe Ramirez got the start over Kyle Witten. Noe has been stepping in as relief for Witten with a great deal of success, so he got the nod for today’s game. Titans were able to get a man across the plate in the 3rd inning. The run was setup by a double by catcher, Dustin Garneau, then Joe Scott sacrified Garneau to 3rd, and Gary Brown got the RBI single to score Garneau.

Then the Highlanders evened the score in the 7th. The Titans looked like they might go back ahead in the top of the 8th when Josh Fellhauer walked and then stole 2nd. Then Jared Clark walked, and Nick Ramirez stepped up to the plate. Unfortunately Nick, hit a fly ball which was caught to end the inning. After only giving up 3 hits and 1 walk, while getting 5 strikeouts, Noe left the game tied, so got no decision.

The Titan 9th looked very promising as we started off with a Khris Davis double to center and a walk by Garneau. Joe Scott came in and did his job by sacrificing them over a base. So with men on 2nd and 3rd, and only one out, things were looking up for the Titans to get a man across the plate. Hope evaporated quickly as Davis got nicked going home on a Tyler Pill fielder’s choice. Then Garneau got caught stealing home to end the inning.

Riverside was unable to get a man past 2nd base in the ninth, so on into the tenth we went. This time, perserverance paid off for the Titan crew. The inning started off with back to back singles by Gary Brown and Christian Colon, and Brown wound up on 3rd off Colon’s single. Then Josh Fellhauer reached on a fielder’s choice as they attempted to throw Colon out at 2nd, but overthrew, so Colon was safe and Brown scored. Then Jared Clark brought in Colon and Fellhauer with a single to center field. Score at the end of the top of the tenth 4-1. Michael Morrison came on to close out the game and took the win for the Titans. Morrison recorded 4 outs in relief and faced 4 batters, striking out 3 and giving up one hit. The game ended on exciting play as the Highlander batter at the plate struck out swinging and Dustin Garneau gunned the runner attempting to steal 2nd down.

Joe Scott tied a collegiate record by successfully sacrificing 4 times in one game. Way to be a team player, Joe.

The Titans continued their success story with a sweep of the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles this weekend, improving to 16-3 on the season. Though the team won all 3 games, they still looked like they were a little discombobulated from their eleven day road trip. The bats cooled off and we had more errors than usual racking up 4 for the series.

Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, while the Titans had errors, they had even more, giving up 8 through the course of the 3 game series. Even with being a little off kilter from the road trip, the sweep was enough to launch the Titans into the number one spot on the Baseball America poll while Texas, North Carolina, and Texas A & M all lost their weekend series. The road ahead is still a tough one for my Titans as they head out to Riverside to play the Highlanders, historically a difficult field for the Titans to notch a win on. Then it is out to Arizona State to play a mid-week two game series with the Sun Devils who are currently in the number 3 spot in the polls. Is anyone else expecting a battle?

Let’s get to the game highlights. In Friday night’s game, the Titans hopped on Golden Eagle’s pitcher, Jameson Dunn, who was only able to record one out, while giving up 2 hits, and 3 walks, while the Titans scored 4, before leaving the game. Their next pitcher Mark Serrano brought the game back into a little more control, but still allowed 7 hits for 6 runs. Christian Colon led the team in hits on the game with 3. The teams were tied for strike outs on the evening. Kyle Witten pitched the first few innings for the Titans, but I believe that he is still having some hip problems, and he left the game after 3 inninings. Kevin Rath came on in relief and struck out 9 Golden Eagles in 4.2 innings of work.

For the Saturday game, Tyler Pill took the mound and put in a commanding performance. He gave up 7 hits, but only one run, and fanned 10 during the 8 innings work he put in. Thanks for the Klondike’s Tyler! If a Titan pitcher strikes out 7 or more batters (and it can be a combined pitching staff count), then the marketing staff throw Klondike bars into the crowd to celebrate the accomplishment. It was nice to actually get a Klondike during a day game that had not already melted due to the heat. Khris Davis was the leading Titan hitter for the game going 3 for 5. Michael Morrison came on to close out the ninth for the Titans.

For the weekend series, Khris Davis improved to 7 home runs with Nick Ramirez netting his 6th. Christian Colon was named Big West Player of the week for batting 8 for 17 (.615) for the series.

I hope the team gets lots of rest this weekend with no mid week games to contend with so they can start conference play with the Highlanders fresh and ready to continue their streak. The Titans have one 15 out of the last 16 games and have completed 3 weekend sweeps. Good accomplishments for out of conference play.

The tired Titans are triumphant as they hop a plane back to Southern California ending an eleven day road trip. The team played 8 games in eleven days and only fell in one game in that time, which is an excellent record for the road. The Titans have definitely been on a tear with their bats and we are hoping to see some of that action this coming Thursday through Saturday series against Oral Roberts at Goodwin Field.

The loss came against Oklahoma State on Saturday, as Oklahoma State played the double header for the day, taking out the Rhode Island Rams in the first game as well. The Titans had an uncharacteristic 4 errors during the game, which gave the Cowboys the oomph to get past the Titans 10-6. The Titan bats were still humming along and we still managed to have double digit hits for the game at 13. Our problem, outside of the errors which allowed the Cowboys a five run sixth was that we left 9 men on base. Our attitude – the team had an 11 game winning streak and you can’t win them all. The Titans played better than anticipated for the duration of the road trip, so losing one is ok with us.

We faced the Rhode Island Rams again today for our final game of the tournament. After we scored in the first inning when Gary Brown hit a triple, and then scampered home on a passed ball, the Rams answered back by putting up a 3 spot. It was now time for the Titans to play come-from-behind baseball. Any true Titan fan knows better than to count our team down and out, as they proved in 2004 by winning the College World Series after a 15-16 start on the year. Up until the seventh inning, the contest remained very even with neither team scoring any more runs. Top of the seventh, Khris Davis doubled down the left field line. Then, Jeff Newman bunted, but instead of being a sac, was safe at first, and when no one was paying attention continued on to second, stretching the bunt into a double. Tyler Pill came into the game as a pinch hitter for Joe Scott, and with one swing of the bat proved that the Pill tradition of being a clutch hitter in a tight situation is still alive and well. Tyler doubled bringing in two RBI’s and evening the score. Starting off the 8th, Christian Colon singled up the middle, and Josh Fellhauer bunted him over to 2nd. Jared Clark got a free pass to first and then Nick Ramirez singled to right. Bases were now loaded for Khris Davis. Davis hit the ball to right field where it was caught, but it was a sac fly and Colon scored bringing the Titans into the lead for the first time since the top of the first. They then held on so Noe Ramirez took his 3rd win, while Michael Morrison took his 3rd save on the season.

I totted up a few stats because I was interested to see how we played during this extended road trip. . .here’s how we stand:
