The Titans didn’t fare well in the first game against Arkansas, as Noe Ramirez gave up an uncharacteristic 7 earned runs in 3 2/3 innings to the Razorbacks.

This morning, the Titans are back in Omaha, NE where they feel quite at home, as they prepare to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks in game 1 of the College Worlds Series. This is always a wonderful moment. Eight teams, who have battled for the honor of being in Omaha, have all of their expectations and hopes in front of them.

The Cal State Fullerton Titans took one giant step closer to a trip to Omaha last night. They faced off against the Louisville Cardinals in what is now being called the game of the Mustache against the Mohawk.

Finishing the year strong, the Cal State Fullerton Titans won 19 of their last 22 games, including a sweep of their biggest rival, the Long Beach State Dirtbags. During that series, Freshman pitcher, Tyler Pill broke the Titan record for most wins as a Freshman pitcher finishing up at 10-3 during regular season play.

This morning, we await to see whether the Titans will complete the sweep of the Cal Poly Mustangs or whether the Mustangs will put together enough runs to down the Titans. The real question, will freshman hurler, Tyler Pill, give my friend Kelly a win for mother’s day? Need I say, I really want Tyler to get the win? Anyway, let’s take a look back at how we reached this point.

Tuesday night the Titans took the field against the Arizona Wildcats. We have enjoyed seeing them home for a while and the two-game Arizona series finishing Wednesday will be the end of six straight home games. Kevin Rath got the nod for starting pitcher. Mid-week games usually have what we in the stands call pot-luck pitching. You start with one, and it’s kind of like a sampler plate, by the time you reach the end of the game, you’ve sampled almost the entire bull-pen. Well, the game ran a little different than normal in that the Titans used only 3 pitchers for the entire game. Kevin Rath went 5 innings, then Travis Kelly pitched 3, and Nick Ramirez came in to close the game out. The Titan pitchers combined for 11 strike outs during the game.

The Titans have been struggling of late playing conference games at home. While they are on the road, every one heaves a sigh of relief because their performance on the road has been nothing short of stellar. With an away record of 17-4 and Neutral field (which were actually played in Oklahoma – so to me were also away) of 2-0, they are a tough opponent when not at Goodwin field. However, going into the series against Santa Barbara this past weekend, we were 10-8 at home. The fans in the stands are not used to watching our team lose quite that often during a season overall, and the chatter was how we would be lucky to have a chance to host the regionals this year. Everytime someone would mention that, into my brain popped the rebuttal – but we’re number 6 in the nation!

For the first time in 19 tries, the Pacific Tigers beat the Cal State Fullerton Titans. It was bound to happen sooner or later. We were all hoping for later.
