Jenny Craig may change lives, but she didn’t change mine. After assessing where I was and how I got there, I had a conversation with my doctor and was planning to bring up bariatric surgery as an option to see what he had to say. Before we got to that point, my doctor asked me to give Jenny Craig a try. Ok, it’s one thing I hadn’t tried – letting someone else handle my meals. Since I obviously wasn’t doing the right things to make a difference, I’d give Jenny a whirl.
After getting home, I started doing my research on Jenny Craig via the internet, so I had a good understanding of the program before placing my call. At that time, Kirstie Alley was Jenny’s spokesperson, and she was definitely having success with the program, so what did I have to lose? I picked up the phone and called Jenny. And Jenny told me No! The call was over so fast, I was left sputtering on the other end of the phone. Let me see if I can recreate the process for you.
JC: Thank you for calling Jenny Craig, how may I help you?
Me: My doctor would like me to try the Jenny Craig program for weight loss.
JC: Excellent. First we have to get some historical information from you. Do you have any food allergies?
Me: Yes, I’m allergic to soy, and. . .
JC: I’m sorry, we can’t sign you up.
Me: But, wait a second.
JC: Our foods are all soy protein based, and for that reason we can not take you on as a client.
End of conversation.
I can’t tell you the feeling of despair that I felt at that moment as I slowly hung up the phone. That was a big step for me to admit that I had an issue that I couldn’t solve on my own, I geared myself up and made the call, only to be told I didn’t qualify for them to help me. I do understand their rationale, and I am not disputing that the Jenny Craig program works for a great number of people, it just wasn’t an option for me. So after taking a moment to regroup, I started searching out other plans like, Lindora, and a few others, but like Jenny, they all told me No! Until I ran across ZoneChefs (now ChefsDiet), which not only provided meals, but had an option for fresh daily delivery. Because each meal was made fresh and they could tailor it to substitute for allergies, the whole soy protein issue flew out the window. The only issue was the cost, but then I started thinking about it, wasn’t I worth spending a little money on to make me healthier?
So, periodically feeling guilty about the cost of the delivery service, I signed up and started receiving daily meals by 5 am each morning. Once I had one of the meals, I lost the guilt immediately. These meals were absolutely fantastic. And surprisingly more food than I was used to eating before. I definitely had a plan that I could live with. How could I make it last for the rest of my life?
