For the first time in 19 tries, the Pacific Tigers beat the Cal State Fullerton Titans. It was bound to happen sooner or later. We were all hoping for later.
The game started off with a moment of silence for Courtney Stewart, Nick Adenhart, Henry Pearson, and Jon Wilhite, as this was the first game following the tragic accident last week. Up at the marketing table, live long bracelets were on sale to help the Wilhite family defray some of the hospital costs. The bracelets are blue and orange and have - Jon Wilhite – Titan Family Forever stamped in them. I will be wearing mine until it either falls apart or Jon makes a full recovery. Pictures of “Whillis” were posted at the table and there were Get Well cards for people to sign. The bracelets completely sold out, and they could definitely have sold more if they had had them. There is also a trust fund which has been set up to assist with the medical costs if you would like to donate any funds.
The Titans did not seem to be on top of their game last night, although there were several good plays made. We led into the top of the ninth from a solid performance put in by Daniel Renken, followed by good relief pitching by Nick Ramirez. Michael Morrison was brought in to close out the game, and just couldn’t get an out. Before the end of the inning, the Tigers scored 4 runs to make the game 5-4.
While we didn’t play to our normal form, the officiating of the game actually cost the Titans a few runs, as well as base runners, which prematurely ended rallies and innings. I swear that one of the umpires had no clue as to how to make the safe sign, but could manage holding up his fist to signify out, so every close play at the bag was an out. The one time he actually didn’t call the player out, he didn’t make any gesture at all, confirming my opinion that he simply didn’t get that far in the umpire’s manual and didn’t know what the signal was.
Our section K player, Tyler Pill will be taking the mound tonight, as Noe Ramirez has run afoul of some Titan rules and has been suspended from playing this weekend. Tyler has had some stellar performances in his past few outings and I’m just sorry that I haven’t had a chance to blog about them. Maybe one day I will catch up. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to make the game tonight as I have another obligation, but we will be rooting for Tyler (and hopefully I’ll be able to sneak game tracker on and we can slope out to check on scores periodically) and all of the Titans as they face of with Pacific again this evening.
Go Titans!
