The Titans continued their success story with a sweep of the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles this weekend, improving to 16-3 on the season. Though the team won all 3 games, they still looked like they were a little discombobulated from their eleven day road trip. The bats cooled off and we had more errors than usual racking up 4 for the series.
Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, while the Titans had errors, they had even more, giving up 8 through the course of the 3 game series. Even with being a little off kilter from the road trip, the sweep was enough to launch the Titans into the number one spot on the Baseball America poll while Texas, North Carolina, and Texas A & M all lost their weekend series. The road ahead is still a tough one for my Titans as they head out to Riverside to play the Highlanders, historically a difficult field for the Titans to notch a win on. Then it is out to Arizona State to play a mid-week two game series with the Sun Devils who are currently in the number 3 spot in the polls. Is anyone else expecting a battle?
Let’s get to the game highlights. In Friday night’s game, the Titans hopped on Golden Eagle’s pitcher, Jameson Dunn, who was only able to record one out, while giving up 2 hits, and 3 walks, while the Titans scored 4, before leaving the game. Their next pitcher Mark Serrano brought the game back into a little more control, but still allowed 7 hits for 6 runs. Christian Colon led the team in hits on the game with 3. The teams were tied for strike outs on the evening. Kyle Witten pitched the first few innings for the Titans, but I believe that he is still having some hip problems, and he left the game after 3 inninings. Kevin Rath came on in relief and struck out 9 Golden Eagles in 4.2 innings of work.
For the Saturday game, Tyler Pill took the mound and put in a commanding performance. He gave up 7 hits, but only one run, and fanned 10 during the 8 innings work he put in. Thanks for the Klondike’s Tyler! If a Titan pitcher strikes out 7 or more batters (and it can be a combined pitching staff count), then the marketing staff throw Klondike bars into the crowd to celebrate the accomplishment. It was nice to actually get a Klondike during a day game that had not already melted due to the heat. Khris Davis was the leading Titan hitter for the game going 3 for 5. Michael Morrison came on to close out the ninth for the Titans.
For the weekend series, Khris Davis improved to 7 home runs with Nick Ramirez netting his 6th. Christian Colon was named Big West Player of the week for batting 8 for 17 (.615) for the series.
I hope the team gets lots of rest this weekend with no mid week games to contend with so they can start conference play with the Highlanders fresh and ready to continue their streak. The Titans have one 15 out of the last 16 games and have completed 3 weekend sweeps. Good accomplishments for out of conference play.
