Phases of Editing – One Author’s Process
As I have been going through the editing process with Nowhere Feels Like Home, I felt it might be time to talk a little bit about the phases that I go through when editing. I will state up front that these phases are my phases and not all authors edit in the same way, just as they don’t write in the same way.
Phase I – Repetitive word editing, or as I like to call it, getting the wuzziness out. I happen to be a very wuzzy writer (meaning I use the word was as if it were going out of style), and it simply won’t do for a finished product. I generally find all of the highly used repetitive words and attack some of them based on those which I feel I may have overused.

Titans Crush Highlanders for Series Win
The Titans have finally broken the curse that they seem to play under at Riverside’s stadium. Prior to this weekend, the CSUF Titans had only won one game at the Highlander’s home. So it was exciting to see the Titans smash that bogey to smithereens today when they not only won the series, but won to the tune of 18-1. For the momentous occasion, Tyler Pill led the defense and notched another win to improve to 5-0 on the season. Tyler pitched for 7.0 innings, giving up 5 hits and no runs. He struck out 6 and pitched 72% strikes. We couldn’t be more proud of our section K pitcher, who by the way is only a Freshman, so we expect great things for Tyler over the next couple years. The comfortable lead that the Titan offense had created gave freshman Colin O’Connell his first appearance on the mound for the Titans. He pitched for an inning and gave up one unearned run, which was set up by an error on the part of Shevis Shima at 2nd base. Shevis made up for the error a couple of plays later by making a spectacular grab and put out.

Titans Even Series 1-1With Highlanders
The Titans have a few teams that always give them a problem, and the Riverside Highlanders just happen to be one of those teams. Our record against the Highlanders playing in Riverside is dismal, and when discussing whether or not to make the trip out to Riverside, that definitely plays a role. It’s not that we don’t support the team. We listen avidly to the struggle via the radio, and cheer for good plays and root them on when they need a little extra oomph. But, since I am working on getting my Nowhere Feels Like Home manuscript edited and ready to send out to my eagle eyed team to catch all the mistakes I have missed (and yes I miss a lot), a trip out to Riverside is asking for a big chunk of time away from the editing process, and if I am listening via radio, I can support my team as well as getting the manuscript whipped into shape.

Titans Sweep Golden Eagles
The Titans continued their success story with a sweep of the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles this weekend, improving to 16-3 on the season. Though the team won all 3 games, they still looked like they were a little discombobulated from their eleven day road trip. The bats cooled off and we had more errors than usual racking up 4 for the series.
Back at Goodwin Field
Titans had their first home game after the 11-day road trip this evening against the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles. This weekends series is Thursday through Saturday instead of the normal Friday through Sunday because Oral Roberts doesn’t play on Sundays. Because it was an abnormal Thursday night start to the series and the March madness dance was going on, attendance was a little sparser than usual and the official number came in at 1565
Review 13: Michael O’Brien and the Magic Hat
What more fitting way for the Lulu Book Review to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day than with a review of a book about leprechauns. I was delighted to run across P.J. Cowan’s Michael O’Brien and the Magic Hat. Michael is a young leprechaun who, unlike other leprechaun children, was born without magic. So, when Michael turned seven, the Leprechaun council had a tailor make him a magic green hat that when he wore gave him as much magic as any other leprechaun child. Michael would put the hat on his head the moment he woke up in the morning and take it off only to go to bed at night.

The End of the Road – For Now
The tired Titans are triumphant as they hop a plane back to Southern California ending an eleven day road trip. The team played 8 games in eleven days and only fell in one game in that time, which is an excellent record for the road. The Titans have definitely been on a tear with their bats and we are hoping to see some of that action this coming Thursday through Saturday series against Oral Roberts at Goodwin Field.
Editing – Where Do You Start?
You’ve finished writing your story and if you are anything like me, you feel like doing a few fist pumps in the air, and taking a victory lap. Walking on air, you’re bursting with pride. You finished. What an accomplishment!
Then, the reality starts to set in. The creative process is finished, but the race is not yet run. Looming in your future is the arduous task of editing your masterpiece or as I call it at this point, my monstrosity. Where do you start? What can you look for?
A Good Day in Stillwater, OK
It was a great day to be a Titan in Stillwater, OK today. The Titans, continuing their road trip, are spending the weekend in Stillwater, Oklahoma, playing in a tournament with the Rhode Island Rams and Oklahoma State Cowboys. The Titans played a double header, so had the opportunity to meet both teams on the field and walk away at the end of each game victorious.
Review 12: Grandma’s First Computer
When I saw this book posted for a review request, I knew that I wanted to read and review it. The title says it all. I immediately thought of the past several years of attempting to bring my own mother into the computer age. It has been a slow and go process and one day, she will finally give in and buy a computer. The frustrating thing is that she has taken some classes and does very well in the classes, but then when it comes time to buy, she postpones because “she needs to know more about that whole internet thing.” I haven’t given up hope.
